Behind the Eight Ball (Big Stir Digital Single No. 36)
The BIG STIR DIGITAL SINGLES SERIES continues to harvest the fertile pop rock fields of the Midwest with two new sides from Kansas City's BROKEN ARROWS! “Behind the Eight Ball” b/w “Shroomitized” is out Friday, July 26 at www.bigstirrecords.com/big-stir-digital-singles and is available for pre-order now.
Broken Arrows call themselves “a band that should never have happened”, but BSR founders Christina (who harbors fond memories of the KC music scene) and Rex (dyed-in-the-wool Rustie that he is) are glad they did. Put together by KKFI DJ Barry Lee as a "dream team" roster to play a Neil Young Tribute fundraiser for the radio station, the participants initially assumed this was a one shot gig. By the time their five song set ended with a scorching version of "Rockin' In The Free World," the full house crowd stood and cheered their set, yelling for more. When the shocked band members gathered backstage afterwards, the feeling of playing together was too good to let go, so they decided to continue as a band playing original material as well as the occasional Neil Young song.
It was Lee (rhythm guitar and vocals) who started the band after setting aside his guitar in the late 1980s when he started producing a weekly radio show on KKFI in Kansas City, something he still does. John Chevalier (the newest member of the band) plays bass, writes songs, and sings. He's played everywhere from Singapore to Salina and was previously in The Waspmen, a popular KC garage rock band, where he played with Dave Storms, Broken Arrows drummer, percussionist, songwriter and singer. Chevalier produced Broken Arrows' first release, Extended Play in 2016. Bill Ryan (Random Astech) plays lead guitar, sings, and writes songs for the band, and Mike Penner (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), who cut his teeth in Lincoln, Nebraska in the 1980s and 90s playing in bands with a very young Matthew Sweet, produced the band's most recent album, Streetflowers.
The band has played Kansas City and Lawrence alongside the likes of The Flamin' Groovies, The Shadows of Knight and Mitch Ryder, and received airplay on Little Steven's Underground Garage. This is their first release for the Big Stir label.
