The solo debut of Arthur Alexander (Sorrows, The Poppees) on vinyl.
ARTHUR ALEXANDER (Los Angeles, CA)

There's a song on ARTHUR ALEXANDER's new album called “One Life (Is All You Got),” and one look at the man's musical resumé demonstrates that he's known it all along. Arthur's packed more creative rebirths into his five-decade career than most artists could even imagine, and hit higher heights each time. The span of Alexander's formative years, from his beginnings as a rock & roll rebel in Soviet-era Poland to his time as the driving force behind not one but two key iconic and iconoclastic bands on the late '70s New York Punk Rock/New Wave scene – the Merseybeat-inflected POPPEES and legendary proto-power poppers SORROWS – is impressive enough. But his 21st Century renaissance is every bit as exciting: Arthur's still got all the rock and roll energy of those early years, as anyone who's seen THE ARTHUR ALEXANDER BAND onstage will testify, and he's delivering records that tap influences well beyond the power pop template while still demonstrating an absolute mastery of the form. The new album ...STEPPIN' OUT, due this summer on Big Stir Records, more than lives up to its title: eclectic, powerful, and daring, it's perhaps the best summation of Arthur, and everything that's made him what he is, to hit wax yet.
Arthur's now a decade into an astonishing third act that, like ...STEPPIN' OUT! itself, brings his entire artistic identity into focus. It's not like he went musically dormant after SORROWS dissolved in the aftermath of their record-company-interference-compromised second album in 1980: in fact, a move to the West Coast found him immersed in record production, working with a diverse list of artists, from LA punk rockers Dirty Eyes to Mississippi Delta bluesman T-Model Ford and early R&B purveyors The Bloodhounds. Some of that roots rock magic doubtless fueled Arthur's return to the stage in 2011 with the freshly-formed Arthur Alexander Band, the raucous outfit still blowing the roofs off of LA clubs to this day. The rejuvenating power of live music inevitably led Arthur to write and record his barn burner of a debut solo album ONE BAR LEFT, released to great acclaim in 2018.
That was followed by an even bigger surprise, one that might be regarded as a miracle if it weren't in truth the culmination of forty years of legal wrangling, fence-mending and re-recording by the original core members of SORROWS: the 2021 arrival of LOVE TOO LATE.. the real album, the definitive and as-intended version of the band's second album. Both a validation of the band's original vision and one of the freshest sounding guitar pop records of the year, the record was a hit with critics, fans from the band's heyday, and a whole new generation of power popsters who had no idea what they'd been missing.
And that brings us to where Arthur Alexander is today. While the rapturous reception for the new/old Sorrows album might've been a victory lap or a career bookend for most other artists, Arthur characteristically sees it as a launching pad for new sonic adventures. The title of ...Steppin' Out! says it all: here's our hero trying on a few new sharply-tailored suits before a rock and roll night on the town, and finding that they all fit to a tee. There's no lack of the hook-propelled brand of pop-rock at which the man has always excelled, but there's a palpable swagger to the way Alexander tackles traditional swing, jazz, socially-conscious folk rock, country-tinged roots rock and even electro-pop. And the point is, these eclectic styles have been part of Arthur Alexander's musical DNA all along, from Warsaw to the Bowery to Southern California. It's all delivered according to his career long maxims: the song is king, play it hard and loud, and sing it straight from the heart. On the new record, he does just that, communicating damned near everything he's learned along the way with his characteristic passion and craftsmanship. It's all pop music. And it all rocks. ARTHUR ALEXANDER is ...Steppin' Out! and the world can only marvel as he struts his stuff.
